Case Study: Sellafield Ltd Fire and Rescue 'Extinguishes' Paperwork from Asset Management Process

BEC implements eSmart:datacapture for Sellafield Ltd's Fire & Rescue Service; and extinguishes paperwork from Asset Management Process.

Company: Sellafield Ltd
Industry: Nuclear
Location: Cumbria (UK)

Data Capture specialist, BEC (Systems Integration) Ltd, has implemented the eSmart:datacapture system for Sellafield Ltd's Fire and Rescue Service. The solution has eliminated paperwork from the Asset Management Process; saving time, resources and improving team efficiency.

Requirement

Sellafield Ltd is the company responsible for safely delivering decommissioning, reprocessing, nuclear waste management and fuel manufacturing activities on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). The company has proud heritage and was instrumental in the development of the world's first commercial nuclear power station, Calder Hall.

As part of the NDA contract, obsolete maintenance systems needed to be replaced to improve maintenance effectiveness. The Lawson M3 Enterprise Management System was selected as the replacement Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for the Sellafield and Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) sites, and this was bought into service in 2005.

It was crucial the solution met the criteria for security, auditing, hardware, software and training requirements. Sellafield Ltd selected the eSmart:datacapture from BEC (Systems Integration) Ltd, as it offers enhanced functionality and interaction with the site's CMMS.

The Solution

The replacement system enables Sellafield Ltd's Fire and Rescue Service to maintain a list of fire extinguishers and fire points around the Sellafield and LLWR sites. Using mobile barcode scanning devices running eSmart:datacapture, all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance are executed for portable fire and rescue assets around the sites.

John Kirkbride, CMMS Implementation Manager at Sellafield Ltd commented, "Replacing our asset management system with Psion iKon handheld devices running software from BEC has allowed us to consolidate systems, improve the efficiency of our teams by giving them access to enhanced functionality that interacts with the sites CMMS M3."

Reduction in printed work orders

The Sellafield site has over 1200 operational buildings, varying in size and holding anywhere between 1 and 600 extinguishers. Prior to the implementation, hard copy signatures were required for all scheduled maintenance jobs on extinguishers and other portable fire and rescue equipment. With work orders now raised on mobile handheld scanning devices, this has lead to significant savings of time and resources. To date, over 2700 work orders have been raised using the hand held terminals, saving over 8000 pieces of paper. With an average of 200000 work orders raised per year, the future benefits will be significant.
